Pride Month and National Indigenous History Month at Keyano College
Keyano College proudly announces its Pride Month and National Indigenous History Month initiatives this June. This month-long effort aims to celebrate the rich cultures, traditions, and histories of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples and the resilience and significance of the 2SLGBTQIA+ Community. It is essential to recognize that while these are distinct observances, both communities have faced extensive histories of erasure and oppression. This month, we highlight their shared struggles and the importance of solidarity.
June is National Indigenous History Month (NIHM) in Canada, a time to honour and learn about Indigenous peoples' unique experiences and resilience. It is also Pride Month, a period dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. The designation of these months is crucial for dismantling the systems of oppression that enable homophobia, biphobia, and transphobia, which are interconnected with those that prop up colonialism and white supremacy. Our commitment to this cause reflects the need for a collective liberation process from these oppressive systems.
Keyano College reaffirms its support and solidarity with Indigenous Peoples and the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. Throughout June, our efforts will feature a variety of themes across our social media platforms and website. These include local history, Indigenous languages, cultures, arts, Treaty Week, and land-based learning. We will also promote understanding and acceptance by strengthening awareness and education about Pride, the realities of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, and the importance of safer spaces. The initiative reflects societal progress and the ongoing journey toward equality and understanding.
The college is committed to fostering an inclusive environment that respects and honours all voices within our community. This responsibility lies with all of us, Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples, members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, and heterosexual and cisgender people, to recognize our shared history. It’s about acknowledging and committing to being in a better relationship, not just for this month but as an ongoing action. Make sure to follow our social media channels for updates throughout the month.
Happy National Indigenous History Month. Happy Pride, Everyone.
