In the world of skilled trades, few competitions are as prestigious and impactful as Skills Canada and its provincial counterpart, Skills Canada—Alberta. These competitions provide a platform for students to demonstrate their technical expertise, innovation, and dedication to their chosen fields. They play a crucial role in bridging the gap between academic learning and industry standards, ensuring that the upcoming workforce is competent and skilled.

Keyano College's School of Trades and Technology plays a significant role in preparing students not only for such competitions but especially for industry needs. This dedication took fruit recently when Keegan Sturge, an Electrician Program student at Keyano, won the gold medal at the provincial Skills competition. His victory means he will now represent Keyano College, the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, and Alberta at the national Skills competition in Quebec City from May 29 to June 1.

Keegan's journey to this point is marked by impressive accomplishments. In 2022, he placed third in the provincials at the secondary level. By 2023, his skills had advanced to earn him first place in the provincials and second place at the national level in Winnipeg. This year, his hard work and determination have propelled him to the top spot in Alberta, setting the stage for his upcoming challenge in Quebec. This journey highlights Keyano's supportive environment that helps students reach their full potential.

The Keyano College Electrical Program is part of the School of Trades and Technology. This department is dedicated to providing students with hands-on experience and theoretical knowledge. Dawn Ohama, Electrical Instructor at Keyano, and colleagues have supported students like Keegan. Their efforts were evident when the department hosted the Wood Buffalo Regional competition, selecting students to compete at the provincial level in Edmonton. Keegan's achievements exemplify the program's emphasis on real-world skills and professional development.

As Keegan prepares for the national stage, the entire community stands behind him, celebrating his achievements and cheering him on. His dedication, skill, and the training he received make him a formidable contender on the national stage. Let's show our support for Keegan Sturge as he represents our region.
