Women's Volleyball
Q & A With New Recruits
04/11/2012 - A quick 30-second Question and Answer session with women’s Huskies volleyball recruits Rebecca Collins and Serena Dixon from Westwood Community High School Trojans and from Fort McMurray Composite High School Miners’ Rhiannon Clark.
Rebecca Collins, 18, setter, Program undecided
You grew up watching the Huskies and now have the opportunity to make the team. What does this mean to you?
“It’s really cool even as a little girl I would come watch them (Huskies) play volleyball and basketball.
“I am really excited to start playing because I love being in Fort McMurray and staying in town. I love the team and coach and it is a good opportunity to get better in volleyball and improve.
“It was a hard decision to come to Keyano as I wasn’t too sure what I wanted to do, either stay in town or got out of town. But I am glad I stayed. I will be working hard this year.”
Serena Dixon 18, outside hitter, Bachelor of Arts and Psychology
Why did you choose Keyano and the sport of volleyball?
“I chose volleyball because I love the sport and Keyano will present a new challenge for me and being local it is not as big as a jump. I really like the coach and he is very encouraging and I see potential on the team and I want to be part of it.
Rhiannon Clark, 18, Middle Hitter, Welding
What will it be like when you finally put on a Huskies uniform and coming from next door Composite High you are basically moving only a couple of yards away?
“It will be different… a kind of out of body experience. You grow up watching them and all of a sudden you are playing for them. There is a little more pressure and you have to push harder and more competitive. I will push twice as hard in the hope of making the team.
"Coming from Comp to Keyano It is convenient and very familiar. It is not much of a change but a shift over.
We also had a quick chat with Huskies women’s volleyball coach Sean Seywright about the new recruits.
“It's always a big plus when you can see standouts and community players who have played at the junior high, senior high school and club level and invested that much into the community and then have someone come to our team we can celebrate that they have become part of our family.
“Rhiannon Clark she is a middle hitter that jumps well but she is coming in a bit injured and we will try to get her healthy over the summer. Our expectations are that she will be part of our travel roster.
“Rebecca Collins has a great work ethic and attitude…and all three girls may be missing a bit of playing experience but with all of them working over the summer and staying dedicated they will improve.
“Serena Dixon we will move from middle to an outside hitting position as she has a tremendous vertical which will help with blocking the outside hitters. Like the other two, she is a great kid and she we impacting our lineup right away.
“They all have youth and with youth, you want to force them to earn their spot not for it to just handed out as a freebie. Nothing is a gimme and they will have to work for the part of the 14 been traveling team and then eventually part of the seven starters.”
Three Locals Sign
By Trevor Howlett, Fort McMurray Today
04/10/2012 - With a few members of the Keyano College Huskies women’s volleyball moving on, Huskies head coach Sean Seywright has announced three new recruits that will be suiting up on the court for Keyano this coming season.
From Westwood High School Rebecca Collins and Serena Dixon and from Composite High Rhiannon Clark.
“We’ve got three very hardworking, very smart exceptional young women so it was easy to go after and select them to be a part of our family and team,” said Seywright.
“They offer more than just volleyball. They’re good students, good people and they’re going to impact our program on a lot of levels.”
Although the girls will be a bit short on experience, Seywright thinks the trio will upgrade the team’s size and athleticism, which will help the team be competitive next season.
Seywright also thinks each one of the new recruits will challenge for a starting position on the court.
All three girls are excited about what they could bring to the team.
“I’m hoping for a positive attitude and lots of fun and just a good season overall,” said Collins.
“We look up to the older players. So I hope to bring in hard work ethic so I can help them improve and they can help me improve,” said Dixon.
“I bring a pretty good attitude, I look at everything with a go-getter attitude,” said Clark. “I’ve been making gains in vertical jump, so that’s an asset for hitting and blocking.”
The women’s Huskies have already starting working toward next season and are hoping to challenge for a playoff spot

Rookies Spark Huskies
01/22/2012 - Keyano College Huskies women’s volleyball team had what looked like a major upset in the making as they took the No. 5 ACAC ranked Grande Prairie Wolves to a fifth and final game at the Syncrude Sport & Wellness Centre yesterday eventually losing 25-23, 25-18, 26-28, 19-25, 18-16.
The Huskies, now at 4-12 in matches won/lost with 18 games won and 41 lost, were down 5-0 in the opening game but came back to only lose by two, 25-23. Game 2 of the best-of-five had the Huskies behind 9-1 only to come back again losing 25-18.
Huskies head coach Sean Seywright went to his bench in the third game bringing in rookie Kelsey Bergey.
The 5-foot-11 right side from Campbell River, B.C., produced right away with two blocks to give the Huskies a 4-1 edge.
Wolves’ Tonya Dueck, coming into the weekend series with an impressive 165 kills, brought the Wolves back into the game but in the end it was the play of rookies Bergey and Britt Kozak, along with the serving skills of fifth-year vet Tena Brass, that gave the Huskies a 28-26 win.
Game four was once again sparked by Bergey and Kozak 25-19 Huskies.
Up 7-2 in Game 5 the Huskies had several miscues losing eventually 18-16.
Bergey had six kills and Kozak nine. Sara Bizovie led the Huskies with an impressive 20 kills.
Bizovie had seven kills in Saturday’s 25-23, 25-16, 25-16 defeat.
Huskies next games are Jan 27-28 against the host Briercrest Clippers
Home Sweet Home
by Trevor Howlett, Fort McMurray Today
01/20/2012 - It’s the last home weekend of the season for both Keyano College Huskies volleyball teams against the visiting Grande Prairie Regional College Wolves.
For the women’s Huskies, this game is important to gain some points in the standings if they are going to make playoffs.
The 4-10 Huskies are currently in a dead heat with three other teams and even though they are playing the 8-6 Wolves, they can’t afford to let points slip away.
“We’ve had a sense of urgency since Concordia and now there is just a constant feeling of go out and play aggressive,” said Huskies women’s coach Sean Seywright. “I think we have to do everything we can to put wins on the board every night, we’re in too much of a tie right now. We need to find a way to make distance especially with some of our opponents playing weaker teams this weekend. We know we’ve got to win.”
Seywright said that GPRC has a very good team with some tall players and a talented rookie, but they are not unbeatable for the Huskies.
“We need good defense, improve our passing, stick to the game plan and pick on the weaknesses,” said Seywright. “That’s what we’ll need to win.”
Keyano’s women’s team hosts GPRC at 6 p.m. tonight and 1 p.m. tomorrow afternoon at the Syncrude Sport and Wellness Centre.
The Huskies men’s team may be looking down at Grande Prairie from the standings but they are also looking for a little home court redemption having played sloppy in their last home games against Augustana.
“Considering how we played last time at home, which was very disappointing, we’re definitely looking to come back and do much better this weekend,” said Huskies men’s coach Trent Mason.
Mason thinks the Wolves are better than their record suggests, especially this semester.
“They’re a very scrappy team that has the potential to play very well,” said Mason. “We know they gained a fifth year middle this semester so it definitely changes the dynamic of their team and they’ve been playing much better volleyball as of late.”
The Huskies men’s team hosts GPRC at 8 p.m. tonight and 3 p.m. tomorrow.
With this weekend being the last home games of the season, it’s also the last home games as Keyano Huskies for fifth-year students Samantha Hicks, Tena Brass, and potentially Mitch Schneider.
“It definitely gives us a lot of motivation, being our last home game and such an important game to push for playoffs,” said Hicks. “It makes it a little more exciting too I think. I always knew this day would come but it seems to have come a lot sooner than I ever thought.”
Huskies not Rattled
01/15/2012 - “Coming off four consecutive matches won, we went in confident that we could do well and we did,” said Keyano Huskies women’s volleyball coach Sean Seywright of the weekend away games against the Medicine Hat Rattlers, losing 25-15,26-24,25-20 yesterday and 25-15,23-25,25-15,25-21 Friday.
Rattlers, ranked No. 7 in CCAA from coast-to-coast-to-coast, were unable to put the Huskies away quickly as the visitors kept the games and matches respectable.
“We did pretty well unfortunately there was some sets where we were close to beating them and had some bad calls that went our way,” said Seywright, who added that the officiating was not the contributing factor to any of the losses. “We played our hearts out but we just had some bad bounces.”
Huskies Sara Bizovie had 11 kills Friday while rookie Britt Kozak came up big time with five blocks. Bizovie had nine kills Saturday.
This weekend the Huskies (4-10 matches with 16 games won 35 lost) host the Grande Prairie Wolves (8-6 matches 28 games won 23 lost) Friday Jan. 20 at 6 p.m. and Saturday Jan 21. at 1 p.m. at the Syncrude Sport & Wellness Centre.
“They (Wolves) were erratic in the first half but are more poised now. They are you, athletic and talented.”
This weekend will also be the final regular season home games for veterans Tena Brass and Sam Hicks.

Huskies Sweep Vikings to Start 2012
01/08/2012 - “Who wants to play? Fight for something!”
Those were the words that echoed through the spacious confines of the Syncrude Sport & Wellness Centre this past Friday as Keyano Huskies women’s head coach Sean Seywright rallied his squad which was down 8-4 to the visiting Augustana Vikings in Game 4 of the best of five 2012 opening Alberta College Athletic Conference match-up.
The Huskies had come into the series with a record of two matches won against eight lost.
Entering the weekend series at 13th place in the 14-team league and with only 10 matches left in the regular season…every game and every match is crucial.
With the visiting Vikings up two games to one Friday, 25-12, 18-25, 20-25, Seywright decided it was time to get the troops moving.
‘I was on them and really pushing them….I was really vocal and trying to get them to the next level,” said Seywright.
Add to the fact that the Vikings had only won one game in the regular season and now they had won back-to-back. “Tena carried us through that set with a good serving run (six points). I think she is one of the most undervalued setters in the league”
Huskies went on to win Friday 25-12,18-25,20-25,26-24,15-6.
Huskies Sara Bizovie had 13 kills in the victory.
Saturday afternoon saw the Vikings come out on fire taking Game 1 in convincing fashion 25-13.
Seywright shuffled the lineup for Game 2 and the play of players like Kelsey Bergey (photo below) and Britt Kozak rejuvenated the Huskies going on to win 25-10, 25-23 and 23-18.
“We stayed positive and did not get rattled,”: said Seywright after the Game 1 letdown. “Kelsey Bergey was great coming off the bench as was Tiersa Kejick. Britt Kozak was also blocking better and playing more confident and more fluent. We now have a little bit more depth.”
Taylor Braun and Kathleen Sharun each recorded 10 kills for the Huskies.
Huskies now have a record of four matches won and eight matches lost and sit in 12th spot ahead of Concordia Thunder and Augustana. Huskies next games are against the host Medicine Hat Ratlers Jan 13-14.
Rattlers are top of the ACAC women’s volleyball ranks at 11-1.

Welcome Back to Volleyball
by Trevor Howlett, Fort McMurray TODAY
01/06/2012 - Both Keyano College Huskies volleyball teams ended last year on a high note and both will be looking to continue their momentum this weekend when they play host to the Augustana Vikings at the Syncrude Sport and Wellness Centre.
The 2-10 women's Huskies didn't get their first win of the season until the last weekend of first semester, but their opponents haven't won any yet this season.
The Huskies need to win both games to stay in the hunt for the post season.
"If we want to make playoffs, we have to win both this weekend," said Huskies head coach Sean Seywright.
"I don't know if I want to give Augustana any motivation by saying we can beat them, I just know that we have to win.
"They are very much fighting to not go winless again this year having gone 0-20 last year, so they're very motivated for the second half to try and get that first win for the program in the last couple of years."
The Huskies are coming off a challenging exhibition tournament from earlier in the week where they had just six players.
Despite a lack of substitutions, the Huskies only narrowly lost to North Division leading NAIT and remained competitive in all their games.
After some roster changes, they'll have 11 girls this weekend, down from 15 in the first half, but hopefully an efficient squad for the remainder of the year.
Although the Huskies defeated Augustana in a preseason tournament, they may not be as easy this time around.
"I think whenever you come out of a long break at the holidays and teams haven't been playing consistently or practicing, it's all about mental focus and how many points you do not give your opponent," said Seywright. "We just have to play a consistent game."
T
The women's team will play Augustana at 6 p.m. tonight and 1 p.m. Saturday while the men's team will play at 8 p.m tonight and 3 p.m. on Saturday.
Depleted Squad Nearly Proves Giant Killer
01/03/2012...Calgary, Alberta - Participating in the Timber Town Invitational Volleyball Tournament at Mount Royal College in Calgary, the last thing Keyano Huskies women’s volleyball coach Sean Seywright will have to worry about is, “Who to substitute in.”
Seywright explains: “We are only playing with six players (amount of players on the court at one time) as a lot of our girls are in the (Keyano) nursing program and had to stay back and study.”
The girls hitting the books back home in Fort McMurray are Sara Bizovie, Tena Brass, Desiree Denney, Haylea Hadfield, Danielle Langkaas and Kathleen Sharun….many of them starters.
The Calgary contingent has many of the girls now playing out of position, namely Sam Hicks and Taylor Braun testing their skills as setters.
With a depleted squad, Seywright knew that the Calgary three-day stint would be challenging.
“This will show their strength of character,” said Seywright of the unit which also features Kelsey Bergey, Tiersa Kejick, Brittany Kozak and Rianne Virostek. “One thing is that they will get a lot of playing time.”
Huskies opened the tournament losing to NAIT Ooks in five games - 18-25, 9-25, 25-20, 25-23, 9-15. The Ooks, out of Edmonton, are 8-2 in ACAC first half regular season play while the Huskies are 2-8.
“It was an unbelievable match and we almost pulled off a shocking upset in the process,” said Seywright, his second season at the head coaching helm. “It shows that our girls can play and our record from the first half is not indicative of how we can play.”
In their other exhibition games the Huskies lost to SAIT, 9-25, 13-25, 14-25; Medicine Hat, 18-25, 25-27, 20-25; Concordia, 23-25, 20-25, 10-25 and have one remaining game against Algonquin College.
Huskies return to home court this Friday Jan. 6 and Saturday Jan. 7 at the Syncrude Sport & Wellness Centre when they host the winless Augustana Vikings in second half ACAC action.
“We will start the second half healthy and it is a must win for us,” said Seywright. “We will practice and watch video. He six girls that are down here will remind the girls back home that we can win and they will remind them that we are hungry to win.”
Brass Named Fort McMurray TODAY Athlete of the Week
by Trevor Howlett, Fort McMurray TODAY
Tena Brass is living the dream. The 23 year-old Fort McMurray native gets to play the sport she loves in the city that she grew up in. The women's Huskies volleyball team didn't have any wins before last weekend, but Brass' positive personality remained a cornerstone on her team, and the fifth year volleyball veteran is showing that consistency and unwavering devotion to a goal can really pay off.
In last weekend's matchup with the Concordia Thunder, Brass led the Huskies in digs on Friday with 15 and was named player of the game on Saturday for her 11 dig, two block performance. Brass is third on the Huskies in digs per set, averaging 2.3 per game – the highest of her career in ACAC volleyball.
"This weekend was the smartest I've ever seen Tena Brass play in the year and a half I've worked with her," said Huskies head coach Sean Seywright. "She was balancing the offense, making some defense adjustments and then herself as an attacker, she challenged the other team. Tena put up over a dozen attack attempts today and that's really important on a small team like ours to be able to draw blockers. She just made the others around her better with her performance."
For Brass, volleyball is a sport unlike any others and it teaches the value of teamwork.
"It's so unique compared to everything else. You have the net factor, it's a game of crazy deflections and you don't get to control the ball," said Brass. "If you play basketball or soccer you get to hold onto the ball, you can be a one-man show, but on the volleyball court you're only as good as your weakest player and you really have to focus on staying up and staying motivated."
Brass' teammates notice her upbeat personality and her positive philosophy in locker room, which they think has benefitted the team.
"She's really positive and she's always working hard," said Huskies rookie Rianne Virostek. "She's there to pick players up when they are down and she's an all around good player."
While playing volleyball in her hometown may seem like a no-brainer, Brass likes the Huskies volleyball program and the Keyano nursing program because they know how to work together to ensure that student-athletes are successful in school and in life.
"We have some really good resources and my coaches are great. The program is a great fit. I want to become a nurse and to help me achieve that, it's important to have collaboration between the athletic department and the nursing department so I can plan out my times and be successful in my degree," said Brass. "It's really important that we have that cooperation, so I can have the support in being an athlete and getting my degree."
The Huskies will train for the next few weeks, with a brief time off for holiday break before heading to an exhibition tournament Jan 2-4th at Mount Royal University. The next Huskies home game is Jan 6 when Augustana comes to the Syncrude Sport and Wellness Centre.
Name: Tena Brass
Hometown: Fort McMurray
Team: Keyano College Women's Huskies Volleyball team
Height: 5'5"
Weight: 130 Lbs
Age: 23
Position: Setter
Favorite Athlete: Former Huskies men's volleyball's Ivan Kartvev "That guy's dedicated."
Career Highlight: "Provincials, two years ago. We were playing in Grant MacEwan and it was the first time in like six years that the Huskies had been to provincials. We won our qualifier against SAIT and we had lost in a qualifier the year before against SAIT so it was nice to get the redemption. We came out and beat the hell out of them and went to provincials."
Career Goal: "I'm in school to become a nurse, so that's my plan. Get my degree and find a job."

Huskies Women's V-Ball Stay Alive
November 26, 2011 - Keyano College Huskies women’s volleyball team stayed alive in the ACAC playoff hunt by winning their first match of the 2011-2012 season defeating the visiting Concordia Thunder last night 20-25,25-16,25-23,25-17. Huskies are now one match one and eight loss with six wins and 25 games lost.
They return to the SSWC this afternoon at 1 p.m. to play the Thunder.
Huskies Need to Stay Alive
The Keyano College Huskies women's volleyball team want to win this weekend. They need to win this weekend. But it won't be easy.
Going 0-8 to start the season was not the way head coach Sean Seywright imagined it at the beginning of the season, but he's hoping the girls will be confident taking on the Concordia Thunder, a team they beat in the pre-season.
"I would say our backs are against the wall," said Seywright. "We're as hungry as we can get, it's kind of now or never type deal for us."
Seywright expects the Thunder will be tough for the Huskies to handle, because they have a concentrated attack from the outside and they have a lot of feisty, motivated players. The Huskies know the team has improved a lot since pre-season.
"They were one of the weaker teams last year, although they were hard working, but they couldn't execute to get wins," said Seywright. "They were pretty scrappyand we got a four-set win over them in pre-season, but they just continue to get better.
"They've built on their scrappiness from pre-season to become a contender."
Seywright hopes to end the semester on a high note and hopes the fans will support the Huskies in their last game of the semester.
The men's Huskies team should expect a pair of wins this weekend, having won six straight matches, which ties them for first place, and matching up against a Thunder team that has yet to win any games this season. Despite what looks to be a lopsided matchup, the Huskies aren't taking the Thunder for granted.
"Every game is going to be a tough game," said Huskies left side Justin Allcock. "We can't take anybody too lightly, especially with it being the last two games of the semester we have to play hard and finish strong. We're definitely not taking them lightly or underestimating them despite their record."
The Huskies, who are off to one of their best starts in college history are relishing the prospects of hosting the ACAC championships, which is a possibility if Keyano College leads the conference at the end of the first semester.
"First place in our league after the first semester hosts the provincials and we're not out of that yet," said Huskies men's coach Trent Mason. "If we would be able to capture these two matches, we'll have an opportunity and that would be great."
The men's team will play the Thunder tonight at 8 p.m. and Saturday at 3 p.m., while the women's Huskies will match up Concordia tonight at 6 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m. All games are at the CNRL Gymnasium inside the Syncrude Sport and Wellness Centre.

Huskies Women's V-Ball Improves
Sunday, 06 November 2011 12:32
11/06/2011 - Keyano Huskies women’s volleyball rookie Rianne Virostek led the team with seven kills in a 25-22, 25-13, 25-14 loss Friday to the host The ing’s University College in Alberta Athletic College Conference regular season play.
Huskies, who were out spiked 38-23, came back Saturday to close the gap squeezing in a win 25-23 and losing 25-15, 25-21, 25-16.
Huskies’ Kathleen Sharun and Sara Bizovie had 12 kills each while Virostek once again had seven.
Kaila Whitton had 13 for Eagles.
“Just continued improvement,” said Huskies coach Sean Seywright of Saturday’s performance “We came out and showed a better team chemistry and work ethic. We had a more stable passing game and had a lot of offensive choices.
“We were mentally tougher. We put a lot of pressure on them and had them rattled actually. Once again a few little errors and missed serves and that was the difference on the scoreboard.”

Huskies on the Road
Friday, 04 November 2011 06:17
by Trevor Howlett, Fort McMurray TODAY
11/04/2011 -Both Keyano volleyball teams are on the road this weekend to take on the King's College Eagles in ACAC action.
The women's team are looking for their first win of the season after going 0-4 the last two weekends, but they may have a hard time against the Eagles.
"They are a top team from last year, they finished at the top of the league in the regular season and they returned all of their players except one on the outside," said coach Sean Seywright.
"I expect a consistent performance from them and some dynamic attacking. We put in a game plan to try to put them at some disadvantages or just force them out of where they are comfortable."
With the challenge ahead of them, Seywright is simply looking for improved play from last weekend.
He knows that his team can play well under pressure and hopes they can realize that.
"It's still early in the season for us and we still have a lot of new players in our program so we're looking for growth," said Seywright.
"They're a good team and they know that we're hungry. In the preseason we only lost by a couple of points, maybe 3 or 4, but we were with them in every game.
"Also we're pretty hungry and hopefully we'll come away with our first win of the year."
The men's Huskies team are looking to build off a strong homeopener weekend and improve their record from 2-2.
Kings is coming off a loss to NAIT but otherwise have the same record as King's so the two should have a close match.
Will Gelderman, left-side for the Eagles, is currently fifth, just behind Huskies right-side Matthew Hebert in kills per set in the ACAC, adding to the interest in the matchup.
The men's team plays Kings at 8 p.m. tonight and 3 p.m. on Saturday.
The women play at 6 p.m. and 1 p.m. at the King's Gym
Positive Game for Huskies
Saturday, 29 October 2011 20:07
10/29/2011 - Despite getting beat 25-17, 25-21 and 25-21 today, the Keyano College Huskies women’s volleyball team came away with some positive vibes after losing to the Lethbridge Kodiaks at the Syncrude Sport & Wellness Centre.
In Game 1 instead of being down 13-1 as was the case the previous night, they stayed even until 4-4 in which Kodiaks Cassie Mucciarone went on a seven serve run which included three aces.
In Game 2 Huskies Tena Brass managed to bump a third hit over the net despite being at least 20 feet off the far end of her own side. Huskies Kathleen Sharun came alive with back-to-back kills at 14-22 and again at 17-21.
In the end it was just too much power at the net as the Kodiaks out spiked the Huskies 39-20.
Sharun led the Huskies attack with six kills.
“We had a better commitment to serve/receive today,” said Huskies head Coach Sean Seywright. “It gave us more chances and got us more engaged into the game.”
Seywright juggled the line-up a bit today starting rookie Rianne Virostek who came through with four kills.
“She is young and still makes a few unforced errors here and there. She brings that fearlessness that kids sometimes bring.”
Seywright was also high in praise of 5th year setter Brass who was named Huskies game MVP.
“When she is focused, there is no better kid on the team. She brings a great sense of leadership and communication to the team that the other kids feed off of.
Slow Start for Womens V-Ball
Friday, 28 October 2011 19:35
10/28/2011 - Keyano College Huskies women's volleyball could not regroup from the opening game against the Lethbridge Kodiaks tonight in which they committed six unforced errors to give the visitors a quick 13-1 edge. It was not until scoring their fifth point at 5-17 that the Huskies had their very first bump-set-spike and point. The Huskies lost the opening game 25-17 and game two 25-11. Huskies coach Sean Seywright pulled three starters and replaced them with Kelsey Bergey, Tiersa Kejick and Rianne Virostek for Game 3 which saw the Huskies playing under more control and confidence despite losing 25-16.
Sara Bizovie was Huskies MVP while Hannan Minck with 9 kills got the Kodiaks honour. Kodiaks had 26 kills compared to 11 for the Huskies.
The two teams return to Syncrude Sport & Wellness Centre tomorrow at 1 p.m.
Huskies men won 3-1 by scores of 25-16, 25-25, 17-25 and 27-25 statistics still to come.
Huskies V-Ball in the News
Friday, 28 October 2011 06:56
by Trevor Howlett, Fort McMurray TODAY
It's another Keyano College homeopener weekend in the CNRL gymnasium at the Syncrude Sport and Wellness Centre as both the men's and women's Huskies volleyball teams are set to take on the Lethbridge College Kodiaks.
The women's Huskies are up first, taking on the Kodiaks at 6 p.m. tonight and 1 p.m. on Saturday.
The Huskies are currently 0-2 after losing to Grant MacEwan last weekend, while the Kodiaks split their sets last weekend against Kings and currently hold a 1-1 record.
"We don't have that much information on them. They've got kind of a new team this year, a couple of new players," said Huskies assistant coach Kristy Fewchuk.
"Their middles are obviously going to be a big part of their team. They're going to have a good fight, they did decently last weekend against Kings, and we've played Kings and held our own against them so it should be a good battle."
She added, "But it's important that we show up and execute our game plan that we've been practicing."
Fewchuk believes her team needs to do well on serving and serve-receive if they are going to come away with some victories this weekend.
First-year outside hitter Rianne Virostek, said the team needs to improve on their mistakes last weekend if they are going to win against Lethbridge.
"We need to pass balls and keep our attitudes positive and work as team," said Virostek.
"Last week we didn't play the way we can, but we should be able to beat Lethbridge because their defence isn't supposed to be strong."
The men's team similarly didn't have a great first weekend, but they're ready to work hard against the Kodiaks after a hard week of practice.
The Huskies lost to Grant MacEwan last week, but all matches except one were within two points.
"The only challenge is on our own side; we just need to improve on some things," said men's coach Trent Mason.
"We haven't seen their side, so we'll just worry about our own team for now. We just need to go out and play volleyball and do what we're capable of doing, having our experienced guys showing their veteran presence on the floor."
The men's team is hoping that playing where they practice will give them a home-court advantage this weekend, as they haven't played any games at home yet this year.
The team is thinking that with Lethbridge's long drive and having their players sleeping in their own beds might help them come out on top this weekend.
"Any time someone has to make that drive north instead of us going south, it's a big advantage," said Mason.
"That first night is always crucial when there is a team in a brand new gym for the first day. We'll definitely be looking to take advantage of that."
The men's Huskies will play Lethbridge at 8 p.m. tonight and 3 p.m .on Saturday
