Huskies ready to crown Kings
by Trevor Howlett, Fort McMurray TODAY
02/21/2012 - The Keyano College Huskies men’s basketball team have finished off their regular season and are now geared up for playoffs this weekend against Red Deer College.
The Huskies dropped a pair of games against the Lakeland Rattlers, the top-ranked college team in the country.
The Huskies lost 103-92 on Friday night and 110-81 on Saturday, but already having their playoff matches booked meant that both teams didn’t have much to play for.
“(Friday) We used that opportunity to play everybody and just get ready for playoffs and we played well,” said Huskies men’s coach Mike Connolly.
“Saturday, we did not play well; didn’t shoot the ball well and we were already looking ahead to next week because the game couldn’t affect either teams standings so it was just two teams playing it out getting ready for playoffs.”
Lakeland finishes the season undefeated at 20-0, while the Huskies finish 14-6. The Huskies are set for a best-of-three series against the Red Deer College Kings this weekend with the winners moving on to the Final Four March 2-3 at Mount Royal.
“We’re looking at the game film, looking to pick up a few things on offense and there are a few things on defence we could do better,” said Connolly.
“We’ve got to exploit their weaknesses and work to our strengths.”
While last weekend’s game didn’t have meaning in the standings, it was the first regular season matchup between two teams that could meet in the Final Four weekend.
“I thought we did a pretty good job. It was difficult knowing we’d have an opportunity to play the next day,” said Connolly.
“When we meet again, the pressure will be up and it will be do or die and the loser is out, which will change the atmosphere and competitive level. Right now we’re just worried about Red Deer though, can’t worry about anything after that.”
Huskies finish 2011-2012 Regular Season. Playoff bound.
02/19/2012- Prior to playing the No. 1 nationally ranked Lakeland Rustlers head coach Mike Connolly of the Keyano Huskies men’s basketball team said “you have to have the horses” to win big time basketball games.
When this writer mentioned to a Lakeland coach following back-to-back wins against the visiting Huskies this past weekend that the Rustlers may have a “few more horses than the Huskies” his reply was….”We do not have horses…we have thoroughbreds.”
With the Rustlers wrapping up the 2011-2012 Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference season with a perfect 20-0 record, the Huskies took the host team to the wire Friday before losing 103 92.
In front of a packed gymnasium in Lloydminster the Huskies kept the hometown fans quiet as they were leading 47 - 44 at halftime.
The battle between Huskies guard Zach Waldher and Rustlers guard Njuguna Waigamjo, both ranked as the best in collegiate hoops, was secondary heading into the third 10-minute period as Rustlers forward Kevon Parchment - who sat the first half on coaches decision - scored a quick six points.
With a full court press and Parchment tossing in 16 points in 15 minutes it was a solid win against the No. 11 ranked Huskies.
Waldher, who usually charts 36-38 minutes court time, only played 29 minutes due to foul trouble, had 26 points for the Huskies with Louis Barham adding 21 points.
Demaine Nelson had 19 points and 14 rebounds.
Kadeem Willis had 24 points and Waigamjo 21 points.
Few time outs were called by Connolly as he let “the boys play” as the final outcome would not affect their upcoming playoff schedule.
Saturday was a 110-81 win for the Rustlers. Complete game stats not available.
Huskies, 14-6, now play Red Deer Kings in a best-of-three playoff starting this Thursday in Red Deer. Winners advance to the Final Four to be held March 2-3 at Calgary’s Mount Royal.
Huskies WB Conclude 2011-2012 Season
02/19/2012 - Keyano College Huskies women’s basketball team played one of their best games of the 2011-2012 Alberta Colleges Athletic College regular season losing to the host Lakeland Rustlers in Lloydminster Friday by a score of 70-64.
Facing a man-to-man defence, the Huskies, coached by Dwayne Vigilance, managed to work the ball inside to rookie centre Nicolle Mackenzie. With the Rustlers forwards collapsing on Mackenize it allowed her to kick the ball back out to one of the Huskies forward our guards for an open shot. Namely Jelayne Dubielew, who shot four for six from three point land in the opening 20 minutes.
Huskies led 18-14 at the end of the first quarter. The Rustlers (12-6) with superior offensive rebounding (eight-to-four) headed into the half up 33-30 against the 4-14 Huskies.
Huskies were only able to have two subs on the bench with 6-foot-2 Kassandra Donnelly nursing a bad back.
A feisty Huskies defence held in check Rustlers top scorer 6-foot-2 Amanda Carlton limiting her to three first half points.
The Spokane, Washington native broke open the close game in the fourth quarter with a pair of back-to-back three pointers. Her fellow American player Amy Warbrick, from Coeur a’ Alene, Idaho was a driving force with her slashes to the hoop scoring 13 points. Carlton added 12. read more
Huskies Fast Track to Success
by Curtis J. Phillips, ACAC Sports Writer www.acac.ab.ca
02/14/2012...Fort McMurray, Alberta - It was back in May of 2009 when then Keyano Huskies Athletic Director Wade Kolmel said: “"Being accepted into the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference men’s and women’s basketball highlights how far the Huskies have developed over the last 10 years. What was once a small program predominantly made up of recreational or tournament sports have evolved into an almost 100-person sport program competing year round in three different leagues of play.”
Now in only their second season of ACAC conference play, the Keyano Huskies men’s basketball team have cracked the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association rankings with a No. 11 spot which was announced earlier today.
Head coach Mike Connolly says it has been a total community effort to reach this status.
“It shows you the respect that we have got in the ACAC and with colleges now across Canada,” said Connolly, who had come to Fort McMurray after completing seven seasons leading the University of Lethbridge Pronghorn men’s basketball program. “Keyano is now an athletic department that will compete with anyone in Canada. (The No. 11 ranking) tends to lend some positive light on Fort McMurray and the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo. People are starting to recognize what we are doing.” read more

Gretzky coming to town!
by Curtis J. Phillips, Fort McMurray CONNECT
02/01/2012 - Guess who’s coming to dinner?
Wayne Gretzky.
Yes. You read it right.
The greatest hockey player of all time, is coming to Fort McMurray May 11, for Keyano College’s inaugural One on One Banquet, which will be an annual fundraising event in support of the Huskies Athletic Endowment and Keyano Huskies programs.
Presented by Quality Group of Companies, the hot stove discussion format event, limited to 550 tickets, was the brainchild of Gretzky memorabilia collector Shawn Chaulk.
“(The idea) started off with the Gretzky dinner in September (23, 2011),” said the long-time resident, in regards to the Kinsmen Club of Edmonton’s inaugural fundraiser entitled The Legends Experience, which featured Gretzky.
It was there that Chaulk, recognized for having the world’s largest collection of Gretzky memorabilia, displayed some of his favourite Gretzky items, including the jersey Gretzky wore when he scored his 500th goal.
During a private autograph signing session with Gretzky that weekend, Chaulk had a conversation with the hockey legend in regards to life in Fort McMurray.
“Wayne started asking questions about Fort McMurray and he knew a lot about Fort McMurray,” recalls Chaulk, who has met Gretzky countless times. “Then I started thinking, ‘If Edmonton can do something like this…there is no reason in the world why we could not support such an event.’” read more

#1) In order to beat lethbridge the opening round we will need to play as a team. We all need to be communicating well and be playing our best volleyball.
#2) I'd like to play Red Deer in the second match. I’m from outside Red Deer (Leslieville, Alberta) and used to play club volleyball for the kings program. As well I have some friends that still play for red deer so I feel as though it would be a good match. They are ranked first right now and feel that we could upset them and move on to the final.
#3) To get to the finals all the players and coaches will need to be on the same page. We need to execute our game plan for each game as well as play as a team. If we take care of business on our side we will be able to make to the final and win. Communication will be huge this weekend as we are playing in a new gym. The crowd is very close to the court and it is expected to be a large crowd as well."
Huskies sweep Lakeland
02/12/2012 - Keyano Huskies men volleyball finished the 2011-2012 Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference regular season with a away series against the Lakeland Rustlers winning Saturday 25-16,25-20,25-19 and Friday 25-21,16-25,16-25,25-20,15-9.
“The weekend's matches provided one last, very valuable lesson for the team before we take the next two weeks to prepare for provincials,” said Huskies coach Trent Mason. “On Friday it took us until the fourth game to find the sense of urgency needed to win the match. Saturday we were able to continue with the momentum gained at the end of Friday's match and won in three sets.
“Our best players on the weekend were Tyson Swain and Mike Archibald. Both were aggressive and helped provided the consistency needed to turn around Friday's match, the weekend and our semester.”
Veteran Justin Allcock agreed that it was a positive weekend.
“Overall this past weekend went well, we accomplished our goals of keeping the provincial playoff picture in our hands and not leaving it up to anyone else. In accomplishing our goals with the two wins, we as a team are not satisfied with that result. We have a lot of work ahead of ourselves over the next week and a half in preparing for our opponents.”
Individual stats for the weekend games were not available
Huskies finish the season with an impressive record of 14 matches won, six matches lost and 47 games won and 31 games lost for a third place tie in the 14 team league with the Mount Royal Cougars.
