Visual Art and Design (Under Review for 2012-2013)
Program Description
The Keyano College Faculty of Art and Design is dedicated to a two year Visual Art and Design Diploma program that will provide our students with a superior quality educational experience. Many fields of study require a comprehension and working knowledge of the visual language. Our students develop that knowledge while building an exceptional protfolio of images. Our students use their Keyano Diploma Portfolio to gain admission/advanced standing in Bachelor degree programs or to launch their own businesses. Industrial Design, Graphic Design, Fine Arts and Film are highly competitive fields where the entrance requirements are heavily weighted on the student's portfolio submission. As professional artists and educators our faculty members are well positioned to anticipate the future requirements for these fields of study.
There are many advantages for students coming into our program, small class size, great facilities and active professional artist educators. All of our students participate in exhibition opportunities which gives them experience in the "real world" dynamics of creating, showing and selling their work. Generally, the students begin their studies in Art and Design they are unsure of what area of this vast field they are most interested in pursuing. One on one advising and assistance is an integral component of our second year program.
All areas of visual art now demand a working knowledge of new media. Skills in Photoshop, film and video are an integral part of the contemporary artist/designer's toolbox. We offer our students a well balanced curriculum in these subject areas with our four Media in Art courses. Our students receive more concentrated instruction time in these areas in their first year than in many larager institutions. We are one of the few facilities in Canada to have a large format fine art printing facilities and HD Video facilities; and because of our small class sizes, our students have more access to valuable computer time in our state of the art Mac Lab.
Please email our Art and Design Student Advisor, Robin Smith Peck to arrange a visit. We would love to show you and your family around the studios and talk about what a future in Art and Design might offer you.

Admission Requirements
- High School Diploma, or equivalent with 60% in English 30/30-1 or 75% in English 33/30-2 and an interview. English 30/30-1 is recommended for all students as this course allows for the most post-secondary transfer options. Students who enter the program with English 33/30-2 and who wish to transfer may have to take English 030 and might not complete their transfer program in four terms as English 030 is not credited towards certificate
- or diploma requirements.
- Mature students (21 years or older): 60% in English 30/30-1 or 75% in English 33/30-2, or equivalent and an interview.
- Students missing the required English grades or courses may complete a writing assessment from which an individual program of study will be developed. Students may be allowed to enroll in one or both of Art 240 and Art 231while completing or upgrading required high school subjects.
