Program Description

The undergraduate Bachelor of Social Work degree program prepares students with the knowledge and skills necessary for professional social work practice. Students gain an in-depth theoretical knowledge, extensive practical experience and reflective understanding of various social issues.  At Keyano College small class sizes and knowledgeable instructors provide a warm atmosphere that enhances the learning experience of students. The Learning Circles route is offered to university and diploma students who are interested in studying in a rural, remote or Aboriginal community and is one route of several through which students may earn a Bachelor of Social Work degree through the University of Calgary.

Program Outcomes

 

As a BSW graduate, you may work with vulnerable and at risk people including elderly, abused women and children, urban Aboriginals, immigrants and refugees, at risk children and youth, people with disabilities, mental illnesses and addictions.
 
Graduates from the Social Work program have career options in the following areas:

       Victim Services Worker
       Correctional Services
       Addictions Counsellor
       Labour Relations
       Child Welfare Worker
       Relief Counsellor

Program Structure

Bachelor of Social Work (University of Calgary)

The University of Calgary offers a Bachelor of Social Work degree program in three locations: Calgary, Edmonton, and Lethbridge.

 

There are no specific course requirements for the first year of the Social Work program. An emphasis on Psychology and Sociology is suggested with additional course work in History, Political Science and English. Students can complete one full year of this program at Keyano College

PSYCH 104, PSYCH 105 (6 credits)
SOCY 100, SOCY 102 (6 credits)
12 credits of first year electives

 

Year 2
30 credits of university transfer courses including SOWK 201 (formerly SOWK 101) if not completed in the 1st year.
 
 

 

Bachelor of Social Work- Learning Circle Program (University of Calgary)

 

 The University of Calgary’s Access division also offers a Bachelor of Social Work program for people in rural, remote ad Aboriginal communities through distance education. Keyano College will offer this program if student numbers meet the requirements of the University of Calgary. This will allow students to complete their degree in their local communities. Bachelor of Social work Collaborative Degree with the University of Calgary

Students may now complete years three and four of the Bachelor of Social Work degree at Keyano College. Students who choose this option have three routes of entry:

  

  • Normal Entry: Having a minimum of two years of University Transfer Courses, a minimum of 18 general arts/science courses that transfer to the University of Calgary
  • After Degree: Having completed a 4 year degree from an approved University.
  • SOWK Diploma: After completing a two-year Alberta Social
    Work Diploma. Along with the diploma, students will be required to complete a certain amount of general arts/science courses. The University of Calgary requires a minimum of 8.
