Bachelor of Education - Elementary Route

Program Description

The Collaborative Elementary Education Program at Keyano College gives students the first 60 credits of prescribed course which can be transferred to University of Alberta towards an Elementary Bachelor of Education Degree. A Bachelor of Education degree prepares students to teach all subjects and to facilitate the learning of children at the elementary school level within our diverse classrooms and multicultural communities. Teaching expertise depends on a range of knowledge, skills and attitudes.  Students must have knowledge of subject matter, pedagogy, problem solving skills and professional ethics as they prepare to be reflective practitioners. They also reflect respect for children as part of the community of learners. Students develop these as they articulate and refine a personal philosophy of education. They develop the understanding of schooling in the social, political and economic environments with a strong commitment to the teaching profession.

There are 3 routes to earning a Bachelor of Education degree through the University of Alberta. These are:

  1. Begin in year one and earn 60 credits over 2 years then apply to the University of Alberta for admission to year 3 of the program.
  2. Begin as an After Degree Student. Your degree must include 6 credits of Junior English and 3 credits of Computing Requirement ( not older than 5 years)
  3. Begin as a graduate of the Early Learning and Child Care Diploma Program at Keyano College. This gives you 27 credits towards the required 60 credits for year 1 and 2 of the B.Ed. Degree.

Please consult a student advisor to determine the courses you will need for your specific point of entry.

Student Testimonials

I especially liked the friendly atmosphere of Keyano College and really benefited from the small class sizes.  At Keyano, students are able to get to know their instructors and receive help in their classes within a reasonable amount of time. The instructors at Keyano get to know their students and cater their lessons in order to best meet the needs of the students. The opportunities offered at Keyano College are incredible!

There are numerous awards and scholarships offered to Keyano College students every year, many of the courses are offered in the evenings so you can still work during the day, and Keyano students have free access to the Syncrude Sport & Wellness Centre.  Attending Keyano College was the perfect choice for me because I could stay at home while finishing my education.
