Heavy Equipment Operator

Program Description

Keyano College offers a ten week course in the safe operation of the following pieces of Equipment: Crawler Tractor, Motor Grader, Front End Loader and Articulating Rock Truck.  The first two weeks will consist of computer based training, theory/lectures and safety training. The remaining 8 weeks will be practical training on equipment.

                         

There is approximately 30% classroom instruction and 70% practical training.

Admission Requirements

  • 18+ years of age and completion of Grade 10, or equivalent, with approval from
  • Physically fit

Career Opportunities

Heavy Equipment Operators use a variety of mobile machines and attachments to excavate, grade and landscape earth or move workers, materials or equipment.

Heavy equipment operators may work for:

 

  • general contractors that build highways, dams and airports, or install sewer or other utilities
  • residential and commercial infrastructure projects
  • municipal streets and sidewalks and bridge projects
  • asphalt paving companies
  • pipeline companies
  • logging companies
  • mining companies
  • landscaping companies
  • demolition companies

 

Experienced operators may move into related positions such as safety officer or trainer, or advance to supervisory positions.

Program Outcomes

Students completing this program will be able to:

  • demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of required safety
  • perform walk around inspections for safe operation of equipment
  • demonstrate proper start up and shut down of machines
  • understand machine monitoring systems
  • demonstrate skills for safe and proficient machine operation
  • interpret and perform correct hand signals for the safe operation of equipment
  • recognize and utilize proper safe work practices with overhead and buried utility lines
  • perform Field Level Risk Assessment as required
  • demonstrate techniques on safe road building and staking procedures
  • operate a Crawler Tractor, Motor Grader, Front End Loader and Articulating Rock Truck
  • articulate a sound understanding and functionality of the controls and major components of the equipment

Tuition:     $10,500.00 + GST

 

Required Supplies:

 

  • Hard hat (yellow)
  • CSA approved safety boots - 6" upper (measured from top of heel to top of boot)
  • Safety Vest
  • Coveralls

  • Prescription Safety Glasses (if required)
  • Appropriate clothing for weather conditions
