FINNtech - Heavy Equipment Technician Diploma

Program Description

FINNtech is a unique heavy equipment technician diploma program offered through a partnership between Keyano College and Finning, the world’s largest dealership of Caterpillar equipment. This 20-month program is designed to provide the technical training to meet the Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training Examination requirements for Heavy Equipment Technicians, and offers students first-hand theory and technical training focused on Caterpillar’s equipment.

During the program, students complete five rotations of 16-week terms consisting of both technical training and paid work: they go to school for two months, then work for two months (earning while they are learning), repeating the two-month rotation five times.

Upon successful completion of this program, students will have obtained a Heavy Equipment Technician Diploma from Keyano College, as well as 20 months and 1800 hours of work experience recognized towards their apprenticeship. Additionally, all students who complete the program with an average of 80% or better, and who are hired by  Finning and remain with the company for at least two years, receive a toolbox valued at approximately $10,000.

The selection process for this program is competitive and is detailed in the Admission Requirements section. Note that applicants must have their high school diploma (GED or certificate of achievement are not accepted as equivalency), and should have a genuine interest in mechanical systems. In addition, applicants should be in good physical health, and willing and able to meet the demands of a physically demanding occupation.

Program Outcomes

This program provides an opportunity for entry into this career field by removing what is sometimes a barrier of securing an employer contract.  Students complete 5 rotations of time equally split between technical training and paid work terms.  In essence, students will go to school for 2 months, work for 2 months (earning while they are learning); and will do this for 5 sessions totaling 20 months.
