Human Resources Management
Program Description
This is a career advancement program designed specifically for students who wish to gain knowledge and skills relating to a career in Human Resources Management (HRM). It is offered as a part-time program with all courses available in the evenings to accommodate working professionals. The Human Resource Certificate is ideal for two types of students: 1) Students that are currently employed in entry level positions within a human resource department (payroll clerk, human resource assistant, etc.) and who are interested in career advancement. 2) Students that have extensive administrative experience in several areas within an organization and are looking to move into a position within a human resource department.
The HRM Certificate program consists of eight courses. Four of these are required courses that develop basic knowledge and communication skills relevant to the practice of HRM. Students choose a further four courses from a list of electives. The electives are specialized courses, providing in-depth knowledge and training in particular components of the HRM function.
Admission Requirements
High School Diploma, or equivalent, with:
• A minimum of 60% (C-) in English 30/30-1 or 65% (C-) in English 33/30-2 or equivalent
• Submission of current resume outlining relevant work experience
Mature students (students who are 21 years or older) may be admitted by:
1) the completion of the above Math and English courses only (with the grades specified); or
2) a pass mark on the pre-admission testing. (Contact the Office of the Registrar at (780) 791-4801 to arrange to write this exam.); or
3) apply as a “Special” student. Special students may take up to four courses (one per term) without meeting the Admission Requirements.

Many professionals start their careers as ‘generalists’, dealing with a broad range of employment issues concerning pay, benefits, recruiting, hiring, performance management or career development.
According to the Government, the Human Resources Field will experience an above average growth rate through the year 2014. Locally, demand for trained human resource personnel has grown with the economy and will continue to expand into the foreseeable future.
