SATP (Syncrude Aboriginal Trades Preparation Program)

Program Description

SATP is a customized 7-month (29 weeks), full-time credit-program culminating in a 132 hour work-placement with Syncrude Canada. The SATP is designed to give Aboriginal students the necessary skills and competencies to proceed on a trade's apprenticeship path with Syncrude or other industry partners, or into further formal education at Keyano College. SATP focuses on upgrading students academics through the Connecting to College and Careers program with a continual grounding of how the subjects apply to trades person work.

 
In this program, trainees will cover the following areas:
  • Trades Exploration: Site Tours
  • Trades Essential Skills: GED Preparation, Interpersonal and Communication Skills
  • Trades Preparation in the Workplace: OSSA/CSTS, First Aid, Shifting to Wellness, Cultural Diversity
  • Work Placement and Trades entry examination: TOWES, Trades Entrance Exam, work placement
 

 

Admission Requirements

Prospective trainees must be of aboriginal ancestry and be 18 years of age or over. Preference given to residents of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo

 Trainees must have a minimum grade 9 math and reading level.

 

Admission Process

 

  • Interested candidates should provide contact information with the Lifelong Learning Division at 780-791-4856 or send an email to satp@keyano.ca .
  • Prospective trainees may be referred by an Aboriginal Skills and Employment Training Strategy (ASETS) holder, Syncrude or self refer. 
  • Students must meet with a program coordinator to start the admission process.
  • Final selection of 40 candidates per year will accepted based on program fit as assessed by a panel of interviewers including a program coordinator, ASETS employment coordinator and Syncrude.

Career Opportunities

 

Successful graduates are qualified to apply for industry related trade indentureships as Electricians, Heavy Equipment Technicians, Millwrights, Pipefitters, Steamfitters, Mobile Crane and Hoist Equipment operators, Welders and Warehouse Technicians.

Program Outcomes

The intenion is for 40 Aborignal trainees to start the program per year for 3 years.

Trainees who have successfully have completed the program will proceed to gainful emplpoyment.
