LINCing the world at Keyano College
Jumanah Elneser calls the Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) program at Keyano College her survival guide. Originally from Margarita Island, Venezuela, Jumanah will be among the nine students who will be graduating from the program on June 13 at 6 p.m. The graduation and the year-end celebration for the initiative will be held in the Student Commons in the main campus.
LINC is a free, federally funded program offering language instruction to people who are 18 years of age or older and have permanent resident, or refugee status. It is sponsored by Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC). Keyano College has been offering LINC since 1996.
“This event will celebrate the progress our students have made in the last year and the successful completion of the program by our graduates. The students are newcomers to Canada who are improving their language skill for the purpose for becoming work-ready. Many of our students have begun to work in the community,” explains Perminder Disange, LINC 4 and F instructor, Keyano College.
“The celebration will showcase how our region is becoming increasingly diverse, and how Keyano with support from CIC helps immigrants to settle, integrate and call Fort McMurray home,” she added.
Jumanah agrees. She says the program has been beneficial on so many levels.
“Since I came to Canada I felt the need to improve my English in order to integrate into society and that’s why I decided to start the LINC Program at Keyano College. It has been a great experience because I learned much about the English language and Canadian style of life. I also met people from all over the world and created new friendships. The LINC program helped me to increase my self-confidence,” she said.
