Mission Statement

The Keyano Childhood Studies Preschool follows a play based curriculum that is child centered and developmentally appropriate. We provide opportunities for children to grow and develop in a secure nurturing environment that fosters independence and problem solving with others. Childhood Studies Students are an integral part of the program, as they learn about and progressively take responsibility for planning the curriculum.

What is "Problem Solving with Others"?

The adults in the Keyano Childhood Studies Programs facilitate problem solving when the needs arise. Our goal is to allow children to make choices involving play and to be part of the decision-making around solving problems both in their play and in their interactions with others.

What is "Play Based Curriculum?"

Play is the basic activity of children and therefore the most important component of any early childhood curriculum. Children's development progresses through play. The role of the teacher is to select developmentally appropriate topics and objectives, plan activities based on the objectives and set the environment to facilitate these. The choice is then left for children to approach and engage in play in their own fashion. Activities need to be open ended so each child can enter into them in a way best suited to meet his/her individual needs.

What is "Developmentally Appropriate"?

Preschool children need more than a haphazard collection of activities in their early development experiences. To plan curriculum that is developmentally appropriate is to provide experiences that are based on children's interests, skills and developmental levels. Teachers and students observe children, discuss their needs and interests, and then plan a program that is congruent with them. This process is called emergent curriculum.
