Circles of Influence (Decision Driving)

Instructor guide and materials along with computer based training serve to provide instruction for the factors that affect a driver’s decision-making ability including: personal characteristics, health and family, industry knowledge, work environment, hazard perception, and decision-making ability. Course content also includes the SIPDE methodology for hazard perception. As well, course content provides instruction for best practices acquired by drivers through experience that have become their rules of the road.

Shifting Techniques

Package content addresses primary and secondary shifting controls, indicators and their interpretation, different shift patterns, optimizing shift performance, transmissions and their functionality including manual and automatic configurations. Course scenarios challenge the driver to apply these concepts and therefore demonstrate good technique and decision-making based on variations in terrain, grade, weather and traffic patterns.

Fuel Management

This course addresses the driver’s role in affecting fuel consumption and savings. The course stresses factors such as speed management, route planning, control of engine torque, and preventative maintenance related to engine wear. As in the case of Shifting Techniques, the scenarios bundled with this course package challenge the driver to apply such concepts and demonstrate good shifting and speed management technique as it affects fuel consumption. The driver is faced with a variety of terrain and distractive events designed to influence decisions made by the driver for the choice of gear, his speed and space buffer, and torque control on grades.

Speed Management

Speed Management provides revealing information to the driver concerning the risks and consequences of speeding as well the factors within the driver’s control. Such factors include enhanced knowledge of braking distance based on actual reaction and response, and stopping distance based on relative speeds, load, and conditions. Additionally the user’s awareness is enhanced for concepts such as centrifugal force on ramps and curves. The risks of driving too slow, and the general design and intent behind the regulated speed limits for roads given the terrain, weather, and traffic. Supporting scenarios stress the driver’s ability to appropriately and constantly adjust their space buffer, anticipate traffic, as well as hazard perception and good decision-making.

Space Management

The Space Management course focuses on the concept of the Space Cushion and attempts to challenge the driver to apply additional techniques such as the Timed-Interval Method, Stopping time and calculation while in motion, movement through traffic, following strategies, merging, and especially right of way. The learning objectives are reinforced through the interactive training, handout materials that include worksheets and reference aids, and the interactive scenarios. The scenarios will elicit various responses and tasks by the driver that focus on the learning objectives and course concepts outlined above.

Adverse Conditions

The objectives for Adverse Conditions center on the driver recognizing hazards directly influenced by changes in weather and/or visibility. The course content will address such topics as awareness of reduced traction as affected changes in the road surface based on temperature, precipitation, vehicle weight, and the quality and profile of the vehicle tires. Additionally the course topics include night driving, urban driving conditions, desert driving, and descent of grades. The scenarios included with this course will stress the driver under various weather and lighting conditions. Scenarios will also provide exposure to various terrains such as mountain grades, freeway, and suburban driving.

Class 5 Driver Training

This course is designed for students who have never operated a motor vehicle before or need a refresher for the rudiments of driving a motor vehicle. The course content will be presented in a very summary type of format with the major concepts of driving provided. The benefit of this type of course is that it provides the student with the safest form of instruction available using the most current advances in technology available in the driving industry. It is only logical that this type of course be the first form of instruction provided for new drivers. It affords the driver with the safest method of driving before hitting the public streets. The advances in technology that Simulator Training provides will be the future of “Driver Instruction”. This course is not meant to replace basic driver training programs; it is designed to afford students the confidence and knowledge needed to begin the driver education process in the safest possible manner. The primary focus of this course is individual and public safety.

SIMULATED DRIVING: Actual driving of simulator practicing the major driving tactics of speed & space management, the components of adverse & night time driving. Rural and urban driving practices.

OBJECTIVE: To familiarize students with the rules and regulations of driving, to provide instruction in safe driving techniques, to encourage safe driving attitudes and behavior, to provide initial skill development in simulated driving tasks, and to assess students development in the mentioned competencies.
