He will be headlining the second event for the Money Matters series on Saturday, March 13 in the Clearwater Campus - Room 228.

Stanners has about a dozen pertinent topics he will discuss a few of which include:

How to Increase your home office claim?

The $2,373 CRA wants to give you.

These institutions have combined their expertise, ideas and resources to sustain Alberta's rural way of life.

The value of this network is that it draws on the strengths of diverse organizations, gathers and conducts extensive research, and perhaps most important, has deep connections in all regions of the province.

ARDN is committed to ensuring rural communities are a place to grow, a place to seek new opportunities, and a place to build futures. To create connections throughout rural Alberta, ARDN focuses on three key areas - research and information, access to education, and networking and collaboration.

The group engages rural communities and its post-secondary members in high quality, collaborative, accessible rural development research. The network fosters and promotes opportunities for partnership and where applicable, provides financial support and consultation for rural research projects.

Cindy Amerongen, Vice President, External Division, Keyano College believes this collaboration is win-win for rural communities.

"This is a network to share our experiences when it comes to ongoing and new projects - models for working in communities and learn from them as well. This means great things for the Wood Buffalo region," Amerongen explained.

Adult education and training are key to strengthening communities. ARDN members contribute educational leadership in their communities. ARDN identifies gaps in rural education and training, and works with its members to ensure that rural needs are addressed.

"We will now be able to tap into a reservoir of resources to help the communities and engage in dialogue with other colleges," added Amerongen.

ARDN was established in 2006 when all of Alberta's publicly-funded, publicly-governed post-secondary institutions signed a memorandum of understanding. Governed by a Board of Directors, the association became fully operational in 2009 when it received funding for three years from Rural Alberta's Development Fund. These funds enabled ARDN to hire staff, establish an office in Sherwood Park, and begin a three year project to help strengthen rural communities.

University Studies announces winners of the second annual essay contest

Keyano College News Keyano College News

Jessica Weber, Rebecca Latimer, and Jenna Hutchen have fifteen hundred reasons to be happy. The primary one being they won the second annual essay contest hosted by the University Studies department at Keyano College, thanks to a $1500 scholarship established specifically for this purpose.

Weber, Latimer and Hutchen - won first, second and third place respectively. First place took home $800, second place was awarded $500 and third place $200 for their thoughts on Public Education System - A Success or Failure?

All three young ladies are ecstatic, and thanked Keyano College as well as University Studies for the initiative.

"It's great to win first place. When I saw the essay question, I knew my position right away. The public education system is not working in Canada," said Weber, a first year Political Science student at Keyano College.

Latimer, a first year student at the College is working towards her B.A in English. She took the same stance on public education, adding there's a major disparity across Canada.

"It would be so much better if the federal government took over," she explained. Passionate about writing, Latimer is a future novelist and says "writing is my life."

Hutchen focused specifically on Alberta, citing the passage of Bill 44, which restricts the discussion of religion and sexuality in class, as well as increasing tuition fees as deterrents to a successful public education system.

"Alberta is our nation's driving force. Bill 44 and high tuition fees are a disturbing precursor that the rest of the country will emulate," said Hutchen who is also a first-year student pursuing Biology, specifically Molecular Genetics, and eventually plans to do a minor in English.

Louis Dingley, Chair, University Studies, Science & Environmental Technologies, Keyano College says the idea was to not only promote University Studies students, but to also recognize a "core, fundamental skill - excellence in writing."

"I am excited to see students get involved in a contest which showcases their skills acquired at Keyano College," Dingley said.

Ann Everatt, Vice President, Academic, Keyano College was pleased with the contest.

"I'm very proud of our winning students, and proud of our faculty for supporting the initiative," Everatt said.

Community supports Aboriginal Awareness Day in strong numbers

Keyano College News Keyano College News

Keyano College opened Aboriginal Awareness Day on March 2 with standing room only in the Doug Schmit Lecture Theatre.

The theme this year was KisKinaMasototak - Let us learn from one another. Elsie Yanik blessed the event, which saw a plethora of activities across the College from workshops to Inuit games, to lessons in Métis dance, complete with a stunning evening performance of Raven Stole the Sun on the Keyano Theatre mainstage. The evening's program began with a feather placing ceremony honouring the memory of Charles Martin, a former Keyano College employee who had a lasting impact on many students.

Jim Foote, President, Keyano College, was impressed with the event. He said the emphasis on learning from each other made the day even better.

"To have Elsie here is just great. She epitomizes Aboriginal Awareness Day - and is so inspirational and important part of many Keyano Aboriginal events," Foote said.

Ann Everatt, Vice President, Academic, Keyano College was delighted with the student and community turn-out.

"This is fabulous. It's a celebration of our students, the Aboriginal culture, and very important to Keyano College and the community," said Everatt.

Students, staff and community members were impressed with the diverse activities whether it was the Inuit games in the Syncrude Sport & Wellness Centre, or Sarah Loutitt's Métis dance tutorial.

"Staff members described Rita Marten's and Margo Vermillion's presentation as heart warming and thought provoking. Janvier Learning Centre students were thrilled by the crafts they made with Julia McDougall. It was joy to watch Red Sky's theatre workshop and Sara Loutitt's Métis Dance; the floors were full and other people were enraptured watching from the sidelines. The crowds gathered around the Arctic Game demonstration and hand games indicated a real interest in these traditional games," enthused Janet Lowndes, who chaired the Aboriginal Awareness Day committee at Keyano College.

"The event provided a solid base to grow bigger and better for next year," Lowndes said.

Keyano invites you to Aboriginal Awareness Day festivities

Keyano College News Keyano College News

Keyano College is hosting its annual event Aboriginal Awareness Day on March 2, and the theme is KisKinaMasototak - Let us learn from one another.

Launched in a new format this year, the event held in honour of the First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples will feature free workshops, hand games and Inuit sports demonstrations during the day, with an evening component added, which will see a performance of the Raven Stole the Sun, put on by the renowned Red Sky group from Toronto just returning from Vancouver 2010, and supported by Country 93.3, Events Wood Buffalo and the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo.

Janet Lowndes, Chair, Aboriginal Days Committee says the new format is meant to be more accessible, informative and enjoyable.

"Ann Everatt, (Vice President, Academic, Keyano College) has consistently promoted the philosophy that the College is an educational institution and as such, has a responsibility to bring learning opportunities to its students and staff. Last spring, she presented a vision for the 2010 Aboriginal Awareness Day; it is to be an event which provides an opportunity for the College staff, students and the community to become more aware of Aboriginal culture and issues," explained Lowndes.

The first workshop will be held at 2 pm in the Doug Schmit Lecture Theatre headlined by Rita Marten, Education Director, Athabasca Tribal Council. Her talk Yesterday's Tomorrows Cultural Teachings from the Past to Present explores preserving language and culture, while Margo Vermillion, former Aboriginal Counsellor at Keyano College and now completing her Masters program in Clinical Social Work at Blue Quill will be speaking about Reviving and Restoring the Spirit and Roles of Aboriginal Women.

Aaron Cardinal and Arnold Fontaine will be leading the Arctic Games: Demonstration of Inuit Sports in the Syncrude Sport & Wellness Centre - field house #3, with Larry Listener and Jeff Cree showcasing traditional hand games, with audience participation encouraged.

Raven Stole the Sun will round out the day at 7 pm The performance will be on Keyano Theatre's mainstage and promises to be an outstanding show, which will take a traditional story to new heights.

"I believe our planning committee has designed an event that honours the vision Ann Everatt presented. This is a College-wide event which has involved staff and students from all academic divisions and beyond. We have increased the number of workshops to provide for personal taste and we have introduced an evening portion, Raven Stole the Sun, to make it more accessible to interested parties who are unavailable during the day. We have been guided throughout by exceptional leaders from within the aboriginal community and within the College," Lowndes said.

Raven Stole the Sun tickets are $15 and can be purchased by visiting www.keyano.ca/theatre, or by calling the Keyano Box Office at 780-791-4990.

Spring to It - Women's Wellness Weekend - your destination for some me-time

Keyano College News Keyano College News

You know that commercial - "where's my me-time?" As women, we often ask ourselves this question. How about making some time on March 26 and 27? Spring to It and attend the two-day fun-filled event at Keyano's Syncrude Sport & Wellness Centre for a range of topics pertinent to women.

There's Meal Planning with a registered dietician, 50 Ideas to Help Get You Organized, Belly Dancing, I'm Going Crazy and My Kids Are Driving the Bus, Personal Leadership, Women's Health Education, hosted by the Primary Care Network and sports like basketball and volleyball 101, to name a few.

Michelle Toner, Guest Services & Marketing Manager, Syncrude Sport & Wellness Centre, Keyano College, is overseeing the event, which is exclusively for women, along with Karen Larkin, Fitness & Wellness Manager, Syncrude Sport & Wellness Centre, Keyano College. Both ladies encourage maximum participation from the women of Wood Buffalo.

"This event is meant to empower the women of Wood Buffalo and help them lead the best life they can. Whereas some events focus on women as parents, or wives - this event is about the woman as an individual. We really want local women to put themselves first and to make themselves a priority," explains Toner.

An important component of the event is health and wellness, and not only physical, or mental, but more.

"There will be sessions on physical fitness and mental health. However, we will be looking at financial health, goal setting, life balance and so much more. Spring to It is meant to be uplifting, and inspiring as well as full of information and fun," Toner added.

Larkin echoed the sentiments. She is excited to be part of an event that "has the potential to enhance the lives of local women."

"We are excited to offer such great topics. We expect the participants will leave with a renewed and refreshed look at their lives," said Larkin.

What's more, renowned author, wellness expert, and life coach Dr. Susan Biali will be headlining the event and share insights on sundry topics. Dr. Biali danced her way out of depression and despair and into the life of her dreams. Today, she shares with audiences how a healthier, happier life is possible. She is looking forward to being in Fort McMurray.

"I am just so excited to come and meet the women of Fort McMurray and be a part of this amazing event. I've had a sneak peek at the event program and was thrilled by what I saw - sessions on stress management, athletics, dancing, nutrition, finances and more. I can't wait, and I'm going to personally drop in on as many of the sessions as I can!" Biali enthused.

No, the schools can't keep them for you. But, fret not - Keyano's Syncrude Sport & Wellness Centre is here to help with Camp Mocikan (Mo-chee-kin).

The camp runs from February 22 to February 26 from 8 am to 5:30 pm and is geared toward children ages five to 12. Lunch and snacks are included with the registration fees. A wide range of activities are offered including basketball, baseball, badminton, soccer, book club, Dance Dance Revolution, swimming, arts & crafts, yoga, and dance just to name a few.

Konrad Plante, Youth Program Coordinator/Men's Volleyball Coach, Syncrude Sport & Wellness Centre, Keyano College says Camp Mocikan is the ultimate choice for the upcoming week-off for children.

"At Camp Mocikan we believe it is essential to provide an environment that is always safe, both physically and emotionally. By providing quality programming and team building activities, we enable our campers to build a strong sense of identity and life-long relationships with peers and counsellors. We always provide campers chances to explore and grow as individuals by including a wide variety of new and favorite activities through structured and unstructured periods," Plante explained.

Speaking of activities, the camp will also feature a few Olympic-themed activities. Plante says the idea is to get children of all ages excited, active and ready for a fun-filled week.

"Each day of programming is separated into six different activity periods. Children are separated into age specific groups for the day. The periods are filled with all camp activities, group challenges, trip to the pool and individual options," added Plante.

Camp Mocikan has qualified staff with many years of camp leadership experience, and strives to have low ratios of children to counsellors: 1:8 for children five to 12.

"Our staff consists of university students and mature high school students that have a vested interest in both children and recreation. Each staff member has handed in a criminal background check, and is fully certified with First Aid and has completed a full day of child development training," said Plante.

Campers are asked to leave all valuables such as cell phones, iPods, Gameboys and money at home.

Registration fee will be $250/week per child, call 780-791-7792. There are 60 spots available for the camp.

Keyano Foundation announces Exemplary Volunteer Award

Keyano College News Keyano College News

She's always been there to lend a hand, and does so without being asked - Christine Tucker has been honoured with Keyano Foundation's Exemplary Volunteer Award.

Tucker is an Accountant for L. Roberts Enterprises and has been volunteering for the Foundation's annual mega events like the Golf Classic and the Gala, as well as for Theatre fundraisers for about six years. The award was announced during the Foundation's annual Investor's Reception on February 9, and was successfully kept a surprise for Tucker, who was speechless.

Dale Unruh, Chair, Board of Directors, Keyano College Foundation announced the award and thanked Tucker for her continued support for the Foundation.

"I'm very honoured and surprised," smiled Tucker, who moved to Fort McMurray from Newfoundland six years ago with her husband.

She appreciated the Foundation for the gesture and said participating in events is her way of giving back.

"When I moved here I wanted to be a part of the community, and then a friend suggested I volunteer for the Foundation. I enjoy being a part of the events and see the bar raised at the end of a successful event. I would encourage everyone to join us; volunteering fulfills you," Tucker explained.

Melane LeBlanc, Annual Giving Manager, Keyano Foundation has worked closely with Tucker over the years and says she has become an integral part of the volunteering team.

"She's an extension of us. Christine has always provided us with the internal support for all our major events. Her enthusiasm creates a wonderful environment. Celebrate this Family Day with a fun-filled Basketball Day at the Syncrude Sport & Wellness Centre on February 15.

The second annual Guy Boutilier 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament will take place starting at 8 am. The event will feature six different divisions including a family division; and is geared at age groups from eight to 17 and up - sponsored by MLA Guy Boutilier, Huskies Athletics and the Syncrude Sport & Wellness Centre. MLA Guy Boutilier encourages the community to participate in the event.

"As your MLA it is my pleasure to be involved with the 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament supporting youth sports. What a great way for family and friends to celebrate Family Day," Boutilier said.

"It is so great that we are able to partner with our MLA on this event. There has been such success with his 3 on 3 hockey tournament, we hope to see this tournament grow as well," noted Michelle Toner, Guest Services & Marketing Manager at Keyano's Syncrude Sport & Wellness Centre.

She says the Centre has come to be a part of our community and "we want to ensure that everyone, children, youth, adults and seniors alike feel welcome in our facility. The 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament is a perfect opportunity for the residents of our community to gather together and share in the great facilities we have," Toner continued.

Last year's tournament was limited to children, but thanks to the outstanding success of the event, parents and other community members requested for adult categories, which have now been incorporated into the event, along with a family, and an open division.

"Keeping the Family Day holiday in mind it only made sense that we expanded the event to include all family members and not just the children," Toner added.

Mike Connolly, Men's Basketball Coach at Keyano's Syncrude Sport & Wellness Centre says the event ensures "continued development and enjoyment of the sport of basketball. We would like to see basketball develop into the biggest participating sport in Fort McMurray. This will only help Keyano College and the Huskies Basketball Programs develop," he said.

Connolly adds, 3 on 3 is meant as a fun day of playing some organized basketball for the whole family with a great opportunity for some physical activity on Family Day.

There is a fee. Registration is available online at www.keyano.ca/sswc, or call (780) 791-7792.

Demers Contracting Services Ltd. named Partner of the Year at Keyano Foundation's Investor's Reception

Keyano College News Keyano College News

The Keyano College Foundation hosted its annual Investor's Reception on February 9, and this year the Board of Governors was pleased to recognize Demers Contracting Services Ltd. as its 2009/2010 Partner of the Year.

Fit Families Challenge begins on February 15 and runs until May 20. The goal is to not only give local families an opportunity for quality time together, but also to raise awareness about making healthy choices, an active lifestyle and information about general well-being from certified dieticians, exercise and wellness specialists.

Christina Dauphinee, Coordinator, Be Fit for Life Centre, Keyano College is running the initiative and says participants will get points for every activity, and receive great prizes.

"We have Wii and Wii Fit, Syncrude Sport & Wellness Centre memberships, ski lessons, registered dietician appointments, luggage sets and Nintendo DS just to name a few," Dauphinee said.

The 12-week challenge will feature weekly classroom and outdoor activity sessions - weather permitting. Skiing, skating, and as the weather gets warmer hiking - are just a few things on the agenda.

Michelle Toner, Manager, Marketing & Events, Syncrude Sport & Wellness Centre says the challenge is not only a wonderful way for parents and care-givers to become educated about living a healthy active lifestyle it is also a great opportunity to visit the Centre to see what healthy activities are available for their family.

"The Syncrude Sport & Wellness Centre is for everyone in the community. We want to help everyone adopt a healthy and active lifestyle, which is why Fit Families Challenge is an excellent program," Toner explained.

So why should you join? Dauphinee says because this is a lifestyle change. The program uses a holistic approach whereby you will be making "spiritual, mental, intellectual and physical lifestyle changes. Plus, studies show if parents make healthy lifestyle choices so will their children."

Your family can be any combination of relatives including immediate and extended family, as well as significant others. Registration ends on February 17 - so if you miss the meet and greet on February 15 - you will still have time to join.
Mayor Blake, Councillor Mike Allen, along with Kim Jenkins, Superintendant, Fort McMurray Catholic School Board of Education, and Phil Meagher, Associate Superintendant, Fort McMurray Public Schools, were among the esteemed guests attending the tour, where they also learned of a $51,500 gift-in-kind donation of equipment to Keyano's Musical Instrument Repair (MIR) program by Rideau Music Inc. through the closure of their subsidiary shop Calgary Music Repair.

"We are delighted to find just the right home for our extensive selection of instrument parts and custom tools. It is wonderful to know that the equipment will be used as training tools for the Music Instrument Repair program at Keyano College and will ensure that expertise in the repair of instruments will continue to be available through the graduates of this unique program," said Lynden Gill, Owner, Rideau Music Inc.

The goal of the tour was to provide a firsthand look at our cultural facilities, instructional expertise and program excellence. Guests, which included media personnel from almost all the local outlets, spent time visiting a variety of different studios and performance spaces, getting a chance to experience each of the four disciplines taught in the Visual & Performing Arts department: music, visual art, drama and music instrument repair. They also enjoyed a learning seminar, or gab as it's referred to in the Musical Instrument Repair business, and heard international guests speak highly of the program.

Mayor Blake thanked the Visual & Performing department for arranging the tour and said Keyano continues to be a cultural hub for the community.

"It was fantastic to be exposed to the hidden gems - as we got a behind-the-scenes look. We want to have arts and culture in the community not only for our children, but also to create that sense of belonging. We have to promote the Arts Centre as much as we can," Mayor Blake enthused.

Al Adibi, Vice President, Finance and Administration and CFO, Keyano College hosted the tour along with Guy Harmer, Dean, Academic & Career Programs. They thanked the guests for attending the event and expressed their desire to work in collaboration with the Municipality as well as the school boards.

"We are in the middle of an arts and culture Renaissance in the Wood Buffalo region and Keyano College is at its heart. We look forward to working with everyone to promote arts and culture," Harmer said.

Mike Durocher, Instructor, Musical Instrument Repair, Keyano College, was thrilled with the tour and being able to make the donation announcement.

"We can now give our students world-class instruction; some of this equipment dates back to the 1950s and not available to them anymore. This is gold for us," Durocher said.

Keyano's annual Career & Summer Job Fair - your venue to network

Keyano College News Keyano College News

Friday, February 5, may be the day you have been waiting for.
The financial guru will be hosting a day-long workshop entitled Financial Planning for Anyone Who Hates Planning their Finances, to be held in Rm. 224 - in the Clearwater Campus, on Saturday, February 6; participants can look forward to specific ideas on how to get their finances in order.

"People with no, or little interest in financial planning will leave the workshop with four, or five precise tips, which will help them," said Cork, during a phone interview from Calgary.

"The basic philosophy is to squeeze the most juice out of your dollars, so you can give minimum time to planning your RRSP, or your child's education fund, and then go back to watching the Golden Globes," he added.

That's his trademark humorous and dynamic style, which participants will be treated to, meaning the workshop will be held in a light atmosphere.

Cork, CFP, is President of TheAbsoluteGroup.com and has 18 years financial planning experience. He has appeared on CBC Newsworld, A-Channel, ROB TV, Global, CTV, QR77, TVOntario, CityTV, and Canada Learning Television.

Participants will leave the workshop with Cork's national bestseller The Money Book accompanied by The Investment Book, and "at least six quick tricks to save, invest, spend or insure wisely. The presentation will be broken up with time for questions and comments, debates and name calling," says Cork.

Sarah Imran, Coordinator, Workforce Development, Keyano College, is overseeing the workshop. The excitement to host Cork is palpable, she says.

"No matter how complex the financial topic or issue is, he has a talent to get his audience to understand. Our participants will have an opportunity to get straight answers from an established expert - we all have financial questions. It's a good way to get an unbiased opinion, without sales pressure," Imran explained.

The workshop runs from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.

For registration and fees, please call Sarah Imran at 780-880-3720.

Applied Research & Development Manager's secondment to AACTI brings numerous benefits to Keyano and the community

Keyano College News Keyano College News

It's an ideal collaboration and Roger Nason is at its heart. He was seconded to the Alberta Association of Colleges & Technical Institutes (AACTI) last summer and the appointment he says has been very beneficial to Keyano College on several levels.

AACTI consists of 17 member institutes across Alberta. According to the official website the group has a mission to "advocate on behalf of member institutions in order that they can provide innovative and effective programs and services to learners through a shared commitment to excellence."

Nason was offered to be the Development Chair of the Energy & Environment Community of Practice Cluster (CoP) by AACTI. According to AACTI, CoP's "support the expansion of the applied research and innovation priority within Alberta colleges and technical institutes."

Other CoP's include: health, IT/Media, community development, and, applied research/administrative.

Nason's AACTI portfolio includes promoting the visibility of energy and environment projects among AACTI member institutions and encouraging colleges to participate in partnerships that build on the strengths of such activities in these sectors.

"My responsibilities include exploring potential alliances with industry, government and other community organizations that will further our applied research and innovation competencies while specifically establishing opportunities to enhance our research and innovation throughout the oil sands network and seek ways to form alliances with industry, business, the private sector and the broaden community is another aspect," explains Nason.

Nason's appointment is for a period of one year and he says the position has already "brought an array of contacts and knowledge about what is happening in the applied research field across the province .The latest research and innovative developments in environmental sciences, technologies and community sustainability will enrich our efforts for faculty-student involvement in applied research projects at Keyano College," explains Nason.

"This will not only enhance the educational experience and scholarship for the College community but help industry, business and the community at large to solve problems and issues facing our economy and society," he added.

Based on a 60/40 split, Nason spends about two days a week on AACTI activities, while juggling his Keyano portfolio.

Keyano launches Equipped for Future - Finning Canada makes first commitment

Keyano College News Keyano College News

The Equipped for the Future equipment project was launched last fall by the Keyano College Foundation in response to the Trades & Heavy Industrial Division's need to cut the lease and purchase costs of equipment for use in training offered at the Suncor Energy Industrial Campus.

Finning Canada has made the first gift-in-kind contribution to the project by donating a CAT 420 Backhoe Loader featuring a multipurpose bucket. Finning has arranged a long-term (five-year) fee-free lease arrangement that puts current equipment in the hands of our excellent instructors.

"Keyano College is seeking industry's support in securing vital pieces of equipment to continue to produce highly skilled equipment operators for our region. The Foundation is soliciting gifts of equipment and technology through gift-in-kind donations, fee-free leasing arrangements, or cash donations tagged to the purchase of specified machinery. We are delighted with Finning Canada's leadership contribution to the initiative," explains Angele Dobie, Manager, Fund Development, Keyano Foundation.

Larry Gouthro, General Manager, Oil Sands, Finning Canada, says the company is pleased to partner with Keyano College and the Trades & Heavy Industrial Division.

"This donation shows the long-term relationship we've had with Keyano College and we hope more industry participates in the Equipped for the Future initiative," Gouthro said.

"There is no better way to prepare for the next wave of expansion in our region than by providing the tools for the College to train the next generation of operators."

As a leader in heavy equipment training, Keyano College provides training on par with industrial and commercial standards. The challenge is to replace or renew equipment and technology on a continual basis.

Ann Everatt, Vice President, Academic, Keyano College notes, "If a company has equipment to donate as a gift-in-kind donation, or a fee-free lease arrangement, and can support Keyano College's training and education initiatives, we would like to partner with them. If possible, we request that equipment and technology donations be no older than five years and equipped with current technical features to ensure students receive quality training on equipment presently used in an industrial work environment."

The Foundation will issue a receipt for every cash or lease donation and the company will be recognized publicly based on the current value of the equipment (determined by a third party appraisal).

Some of the equipment required includes: bobcats, skid steer loaders, rough terrain forklifts, wheel loaders, and 320 excavators to name a few.

"This is a win-win situation, by equipping us with these donations; industry will equip themselves with future employees. Thank you Finning Canada for leading the way on this Equipped for the Future initiative," added Everatt.

How to be a champion? Olympic coach shares traits for success

Keyano College News Keyano College News

"Being a champion doesn't mean being number one, but to not settle for mediocrity" - Debbie Muir had the audience at her opening line last night, as she headlined the fourth event of the Enbridge Famous Five Speaker Series.

The renowned Canadian swimming coach spoke to a group of about 80 at MacDonald Island Park in the Miskanaw Ballroom, and shared four tips from her book Great Traits of Champions, which she co-wrote with Mark Tewksbury, Olympic gold-medalist swimmer --traits applicable to not just athletes, but everyone.

The first trait is to Be Aware - Muir touched on how people often are not aware of their own thoughts, especially negative ones and let the vicious circle impact them for the worse.

"As a leader you have the ability to influence others positively, or negatively. You need to take responsibility for what your thoughts are - according to a study we have 60,000 thoughts a day, of which 31,000 are negative; be aware of them and then change them," Muir emphasized.

During her discussion, Muir shared anecdotes from her 27-year coaching career, which includes coaching Tewksbury in 1991, when he went on to defeat American Jeff Rouse in 1992 during the Barcelona Olympics- coming up from behind and making the cover of Time magazine.

"We planned to defeat Jeff Rouse, which is the next trait - Make a Plan, and begin with the end in mind…next Go The Distance - on the way to your goal, you must be ready to persist through tough times and periods of hard work," Muir encouraged.

She also emphasized finding the time to have fun, while being goal-oriented, and being a team-player. "Change Why Can't I? to Why Not Me!" continued Muir, who will also be a coach mentor for the upcoming Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver.

The final trait is to Make Possible - the embodiment of the "why not" attitude. She shared how she was recruited to start Own the Podium - an initiative which makes funding possible for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic athletes.

"Look for the star in others, and create a lasting win. This is how legacy happens. The Famous Five embodied the trait of legacy, they were champions who made women's rights possible," said Muir.

And, a star is what Fatima Dhooma thought Muir was. The ninth-grader at Composite High School was very impressed with the talk and said she'll remember Debbie Muir forever.

"I'm going to reflect on everything Debbie talked about today. Her talk was inspirational, and I can't wait to read her book," said the 14-year-old who is a student athlete and leader.

Guy Harmer, Dean, Academic & Career programs, Keyano College was moved as well.

"The talk was excellent. Leadership is valuable in everyone's life and while the Famous Five made a historic jump with their legacy, to hear a contemporary speak like this is great," Harmer said.

Keyano unveils state-of-the-art mobile driver training simulators

Keyano College News Keyano College News

Driving trucks can be fun and nerve-wrecking, even if the experience is simulated - about 50 people found that out first hand during an open house at Keyano's Suncor Energy Industrial Campus (SEIC) yesterday, which show-cased Keyano's new driver training simulators.

The new simulators, acquired for about $2 million are a direct result of community demand. The mobile unit features driving training courses, which can be taken to industry, or other clients. Courses such as Defensive Driving, Emergency Maneuvers, Space Management and Adverse Conditions, to name a few are offered, and clients can practice driving snow ploughs, ambulances, or fire trucks.

The five stationary units will be used for the four-week Haul Truck Operator course, which will feature 15 students every month and starts on Monday, February 1. Thanks to Syncrude Canada Limited, Suncor Energy and Shell Albian Sands - companies on the advisory committee for the program -- eligible students will be offered a three-month paid work term at the end of the course.

"Over 90 per cent of our students gain full-time employment with industry. We are grateful to the oil sands for this collaboration," said Janet Somerville, Coordinator, Heavy Equipment program.

Dennis Vezina, Instructor, Heavy Haul Truck program, Keyano College, says the simulators are a great opportunity to provide students with hands-on training on cutting-edge technology.

"This is top line technology. Students learn to get comfortable with the vehicle, and build their confidence level as they go," he said.

Al Adibi, Vice President, Finance and CFO, Keyano College attended the event and said the simulators will not only "accelerate the program, but are in direct response to industry demand."

Jim Foote, President, Keyano College expressed his appreciation for the new addition to Keyano's fleet.

"Our Heavy Equipment Program has worked extensively with the Steering Committee members to find the best training solution to increase both the number of trained operators and the level of expertise of operators in our region. The haul-truck simulators increase the seat time for students and ensure that they adhere to mine site safety regulations prior to setting foot on a site," he said.

"The mobile driver training trailer will provide a safe learning environment for new and experienced drivers. Our partners have shown their significant support for simulator training at Keyano College. We'd like to thank Shell Canada and Suncor Energy for their $600,000 in funding towards the purchase of these training tools," Foote added.

University Studies at Keyano invites you to Flu Pandemics & Pandemonium: The Science and Media of H1N1 and Influenza

Keyano College News Keyano College News

Has H1N1 outlived its 15 minutes of fame? Is another virus lurking on the horizon? Microbiologist Blaine Legaree invites you to find out on January 29 during his free talk entitled Flu Pandemics & Pandemonium: The Science and Media of H1N1 and Influenza.

A Biology Instructor in the University Studies department at Keyano College, Legaree, completed his Ph.D. at the University of Guelph, and has always been fascinated by infectious diseases, particularly influenza.

"The talk will examine the history of the influenza virus going back to Spanish Influenza in 1918, and discuss H1N1, as well as how media handled the latter," explains Legaree, who has been with the College for almost two years.

Using layperson's terms he will examine the genetics and origins of H1N1, and future influenza strains that are potentially fatal.

"As we dig deeper into this virus, we know more about it, particularly all the material coming in about Spanish Flu, the history will help us understand the present, and the future," continued Legaree.

Vaccines are also on the agenda. To vaccinate, or not to vaccinate? Legaree says the age-old question will also be part of the discussion with an answer provided.

So why should you attend the lecture? Because it's interesting, emphasizes Legaree.

"Understanding the virus and its biology helps you understand your own questions," he adds.

The talk will be held in the Doug Schmit Lecture Theatre (Rm. 273) at 7 pm.

Preston Manning impresses captivated audience - shares insights on Alberta politics

Keyano College News Keyano College News

When Preston Manning wrapped up his talk, the thundering applause from over 120 people said it all. Mr. Manning had wowed a captivated, and enthusiastic audience, which benefited from his several insights ranging in topics from accountability to grading Alberta's performance.

Headlining the Global Address Speaker Series at Keyano College last night, Mr. Manning spoke eloquently about past, current and future political climate of the Province. His father, Ernest Manning was the longest serving Premier of Alberta - with 25 years of service - Preston Manning inherited provincial politics and has a firm finger on the pulse of the region.

"There have been peculiar patterns in our provincial politics. We've had only four administrations in 100 years - so there have been long periods of one government. There has been periodical upheaval, and no government has ever been replaced by the traditional opposition - always a new group," explained Mr. Manning.

Factors prevalent in the current political climate as well. Mr. Manning also spoke in length about an upcoming Conference on Alberta's Future slated for February 5 and 6 in Edmonton, co-hosted by The Manning Centre for Building Democracy. The event will see both Premier Stelmach and Danielle Smith, leader of the Wildrose Alliance in attendance to answer questions from Albertans who will grade Alberta on key areas such as fiscal responsibility, balanced economic growth, health, education, and democratic participation, to name a few.

"The Conference is an attempt to showcase Wildrose and Government responses, in the end Albertans decide; and I'll predict many would have by the next provincial election," Mr. Manning continued.

Among other subjects of local interest, Mr. Manning also touched on "full-cost accounting," for all energy sources, not just the oil sands.

"By 2020 the world will need 80 million barrels of oil per day, down from 100 million, and (North America) wants to be less dependent on Middle Eastern oil. How do you reconcile this demand with environmental conservation? We should make all energy sources: hydro, solar, and nuclear accountable not just the oil sands," he said.

An enthusiastic audience asked several questions which ran for about 45 minutes, testifying to the overwhelming success of the event.

Jim Foote, President, Keyano College attended the talk and said Mr. Manning's address was exactly what the Global Address Speaker Series entails.

"We couldn't have found a better speaker. Preston exemplifies the excellence this series was created for. He was very informative, thought-provoking and stimulated conversation from the audience," Foote said.

Keyano's Global Address Speaker Series promises to spark dialogue and bring a variety of diverse topics to the Wood Buffalo region.

Renowned Olympic Swimming Coach to headline next Enbridge Famous Five Speakers Series event

Keyano College News Keyano College News

Olympic fever is on, and Keyano's Enbridge Famous Five Speaker Series is proud to host Olympic Swimming Coach, Debbie Muir on January 28 at MacDonald Island Park in the Miskanaw Ballroom.

Muir is one of Canada's most recognized and celebrated coaches. She'll be headlining the fourth event of the series.

The pursuit of excellence and cultivating it in others — Muir can describe her life-long goal succinctly this way, and she'll be sharing this message during her talk, which starts at 7 pm.

An international medalist in the sport of synchronized swimming, Muir became the head coach of the Canadian National Synchronized Swimming team in 1976. Just two years later she led her swimmers to two world championship titles in Berlin, Germany — a first for Canada. Another four years later this remarkable accomplishment was repeated with two gold medals at the world championships in Guayaquil, Ecuador.

"I'm all about achieving excellence and how to be a champion personally and professionally," said Muir during a phone interview from Calgary.

She says everyone can achieve success and help others achieve success by following some basics, which will be discussed in her talk.

"A leader is someone who helps others achieve their highest level of performance," Muir said.

Nelda Schulte, Workforce Development Coordinator, Keyano College says it's great to have someone of Muir's caliber to headline an event in January — prime time for New Year's resolutions.

"She inspires excellence and is a well-known coach. We are looking forward to her visit," Schulte said.

In 2008 Muir took her search for excellence a step further and co-founded Great Traits Inc. along with Mark Tewksbury. According to its website, the company inspires possibility and excellence, and connects individuals, teams and organizations to the fundamentals of achievers, leaders and legacy.

And legacy is what the Enbridge Famous Five Speaker Series celebrates. It was started at the College to inspire and educate Canadians to become nation builders in the legacy of the Famous Five: Emily Murphy, Louise McKinney, Nellie McClung, Henrietta Muir Edwards and Irene Parlby - who fought for female suffrage, and are known for their successful appeal of the 'Persons' Case, which established the word "persons" as including both women and men.

Gamble, 29, enrolled in Keyano's Fourth Class Power Engineering Program in 2007. He was announced as the winner for his combined College program and SOPEEC (Standardization of Power Engineer Examinations Committee) exam average of 92.18 per cent on January 4, beating out thousands of students from across the nation. The results are tabulated following the completion of the Alberta Boilers Safety Association (ABSA) exam.

Currently, he is enrolled in Keyano's online Third Class - Part B initiative; and said the award was completely unexpected, but felt good.

"It is good to be recognized for the hard work I did. I had great instructors at Keyano College like Frank Yin and Eric Wheeler who were very helpful and prepared me for actual field work," said Gamble, who completed a work term with Suncor Firebag.

Eric Wheeler, Gamble's Power Engineering Instructor at the College says Gamble is an excellent student.

"Brian is a hard-worker. He is a quiet guy who always gets top grades. Our program at Keyano College is outstanding - it attracts top students," Wheeler explained.

The purpose of the PanGlobal Training Systems award is to publicly acknowledge the efforts of a Fourth Class Power Engineering student and the instructors whose combined perseverance enabled this achievement.

A prize of $1,000 comes with the award as well as a trip to the award ceremony, which will take place this year in Saint John, NB, in June where Gamble will be honoured during an IPECC (Interprovincial Power Engineering Curriculum Committee) meeting, which represents educators, training providers and industry from across Canada.

Elizabeth Ross, Program Manager, Power Engineering, Keyano College is excited about the award.

"This national recognition shows what an outstanding program we have at Keyano College and what a small college can do for its students. We have a tough screening process featuring interviews and are very proud of Brian," Ross enthused.

Gamble is the second student from Keyano to win this prestigious award. Sholeh Kazemi won in 2006.

Excitement grows for Preston Manning visit to headline The Global Address Speaker Series at Keyano

Keyano College News Keyano College News

"If we could first know where we are, and whither we are tending, we could then better judge what to do and how to do it."

This quote from Abraham Lincoln will be the basis of Preston Manning's address as he discusses the political future of Alberta, in particular, what the next chapter in Alberta's development will look like during The Global Address on January 21, 2010 on Keyano Theatre's Mainstage.

Mr. Manning is a great Canadian political visionary who has tirelessly championed the cause of democratic and political reform. He founded two political parties - the Reform Party and the Canadian Reform Conservative Alliance - both of which became the official Opposition on the Canadian Parliament. Mr. Manning served as the Leader of the Opposition from 1997 to 2000.

Dennis Westergaard, Political Science Instructor, Keyano College is looking forward to the event.

"I'm thrilled that a politician of this magnitude will be coming to Keyano College, and am looking forward to meeting and shaking hands with him," said Westergaard.

As founder, President and CEO of the Manning Centre for Building Democracy, Mr. Manning continues his lifelong commitment to improving Canada's democracy.

"The work he is doing with the Manning Centre is some of the most important work of his life. He is revitalizing democracy in Canada," added Westergaard.

During his talk, he will look at Alberta's performance in six crucial areas of development, and will offer his insights into actions that can be taken to improve, or maintain, that performance. The six crucial areas are: handling of public money (fiscal responsibility); balanced economic growth; environmental conservation; health and education; democratic participation and leadership on the national stage.

Westergaard is looking forward to Mr. Manning's thoughts about Canada and Alberta's place in the Confederation and the discussion of the provincial fiscal climate.

"Fort McMurray is the heart of the Alberta economy and that makes Alberta very important to the nation. I'm interested in hearing his thoughts," Westergaard added.

Westergaard is promoting the event to his Political Science students as well, who he says would benefit from the talk immensely.

"Just to be able to hear a politician of this caliber is great for students. He has a wealth of knowledge about Canada and Alberta and practically found the current party in Government," he said.

The Global Address at Keyano College has a focus to bring about a variety of world-class perspectives and ideas to Wood Buffalo. It has been sponsored in part by the Shell Campus Ambassador Program, Country 93.3, Rock 97.9 and the Fort McMurray Today.

Tickets are $23 available at the Keyano Box Office, 780-791-4990 and can be purchased online at www.keyano.ca/theatre

Keyano opens printshop to foster art in the community

Keyano College News Keyano College News

Here's Keyano's New Year's gift for the artists in our community - the printshop will be open for renting to qualified printmakers effective immediately.

Located in the Norm Weiss Art Centre, the state-of-the-art printshop provides print-artists with the ability to produce work in a professional, safe environment. It is designed and built to provide educational opportunities for Art & Design students and is equipped with facilities to print lithography, silkscreen, relief and copper etching.

The idea of opening the printshop to community renters was born from two needs explains Robin Smith Peck, Art Instructor, Keyano College, and a print artist.

"Firstly, we want to participate in creating an art community in Fort McMurray. The number one road block to developing a practicing community of artists in our city is the lack of available, affordable studio space. Exhibition opportunities are interconnected to that need. Printmakers, traditionally share space and equipment and as there is no community shop our thought was that Keyano could contribute by opening our shop up to community printmakers."

The second reason has to do with graduating students. Keyano College is graduating/training approximately five printmakers per year.

"These beginning printmakers have nowhere in the city to continue practicing their art. By opening up the Keyano Printshop for rental by these artists we are again contributing to the art community as a whole and while making our printmaking program more desirable to interested community members. People are more likely to learn a new medium if they know that they can continue practicing it once they are finished classes," Smith Peck continues.

Available equipment includes an etching press used for copper etching and intaglio/relief printing; lithographic press for stone and plate lithography and silkscreen area including vacuum table, screens and exposure unit.

Due to the highly technical nature of printmaking, all renters must go through an admission interview to gain access to the printshop facility. At this time, artists must show technical proficiency and be prepared to discuss their planned use for shop equipment.

For interviews, call Robin Smith Peck at 780-792-5607, or email robin.smith-peck@keyano.ca

Astronomy Series at Keyano making waves - Gravity waves

Keyano College News Keyano College News

Launched a year-and-a-half ago, the Astronomy Series at Keyano College is gaining momentum with audience numbers going up for each lecture. You can say it is making waves - gravity waves to be specific on January 8.

Jean-Pierre De Villiers, University Studies Instructor, Keyano College, and Astrophysicist hosts the Astronomy Series in the Doug Schmit Lecture Theatre at Keyano College. He says gravity waves has a direct connection with the audience.

"I try to keep my lectures relevant to the region. The idea for this talk emerged from my last lecture on stars and pulsars when a few guests requested that I speak about gravity waves," explains De Villiers.

Gravity waves are ripples in the fabric of space as predicted by Albert Einstein but the "last big thing not verified yet with his Theory of Relativity," says De Villiers.

Another way to understand gravity waves is to envision two black holes - when they collide and merge they create a disturbance in their gravitational field - thereby creating waves of gravity.

De Villiers says while it is a technological feat to measure the waves, laser-based apparatus has recently come on line, and the difficulties in measuring them from earth-based observatories will also be discussed during the talk.

"I work by analogy and use laypersons terms, so the talk is meant for a general audience," adds De Villiers.

There will be an astronomical viewing session after the talk (weather permitting). The lecture starts at 7 pm and is free for the public. The Doug Schmit Lecture Theatre is located on the second floor of the Clearwater Campus adjacent to the Syncrude Technology Centre.
